Calendar spread

A calendar spread is the price difference between two futures contracts on the same asset with different expiry dates, such as a December and a March contract.

Traders can buy one expiry and sell the other to trade the difference rather than the price itself. The gap usually reflects the cost of holding the asset until the later date, and it narrows as the nearer contract approaches expiry.
