Big player

A big player is a participant large enough to move price, such as a fund or a market maker, who builds a position slowly inside a sideways channel.

A big player cannot buy or sell everything at once without moving price against itself, so it accumulates over days, weeks or months. In the author’s experience a big player takes about 40% of the volume traded in the channel; the other 60% comes from ordinary buyers and sellers who keep price moving. To get the position, the big player can draw whatever the chart needs: false breaks, scary candles, dull weeks.
