Average true range (ATR)

The average true range (ATR) is the average size of a candle's full move, including any gap from the previous close, usually over the last 14 candles. On daily candles it tells you how far price moves on an ordinary day.

The true range of a day is the largest of three distances: the day’s high to its low, the high to the previous close, and the low to the previous close. The ATR averages it, usually over 14 days. From October 2025 to October 2026, the Bitcoin perpetual’s daily ATR averaged 3.46% of the price, between 1.6% on calm days and 7.3% in the most volatile weeks.
